Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are made of metal, ceramic, or porcelain fused to metal. The type of dental crown material utilized during your dental crown procedure will depend on your unique needs and goals, as well as the recommendation of La Jolla cosmetic dentist Dr. William Britton.

Metal Dental Crowns

Metallic crowns may consist of various different metals including gold alloy, palladium, nickel alloy, or chromium alloy. These crowns are extremely durable and often require less removal of natural tooth structure than porcelain fused to metal or all porcelain crowns. Their metallic color makes them a poor choice for teeth that are highly visible, however they may be an ideal option for repairing back teeth.

All-Ceramic Dental Crowns (Porcelain Crowns)

All Ceramic Dental Crowns (Porcelain Crowns) All ceramic dental crowns create the most natural-looking appearance of any crown. The porcelain material resembles natural tooth structure and as a result they provide a color, depth, and translucency that is unmatched. All ceramic dental crowns may be made of porcelain, resins, or dental ceramic materials. They are material of choice for teeth that are highly visible. All ceramic dental crowns can be made of porcelain, resins, or dental ceramic materials.

Porcelain Crowns (Porcelain Fused to Metal)

Porcelain Crowns (Porcelain Fused to Metal) Dental crowns made of porcelain fused to metal are stronger than all-ceramic versions and more aesthetically pleasing than those made of metal. However, their metal shell gives porcelain fused to metal crowns an opaque or chalky appearance. Because they lack the reflective quality of natural teeth, porcelain fused to metal crowns are not as discreet as all ceramic or porcelain crowns.
